Webinar: The pulp and paper industry and its #BigBadBiomass investments in the EU
October 4, 2023
Join us on the International Day of Action Against Big Biomass to look at a major player in the EU’s biomass energy sector: the pulp and paper industry
Hour-long-webinar, focussing on the EU-s three largest pulp and paper-producing countries: Sweden, Finland and Portugal.
Pulp and paper companies are increasingly investing in biomass plants which burn sometimes very large quantities of wood additional to the energy needs of the pulpmills themselves. Excess electricity is sold to the grid – a lucrative deal due to biomass subsidies and the exemption of biomass energy from the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.
Speakers:
Marina Ilaria, Board member of Skydda Skoken – Protect the Forest Sweden
Varpu Sairinen, Co-coordinator of the Environmental Paper Network’s International Biomass Working Group
Oliver Munnion, activist and researcher based in Portugal
