The Government has made a decision in favour of handing billions more tree burning subsidies to Drax and Lynemouth Power. This is a disaster for forests, communities, our planet and pushes our energy bills up even more whilst lining the pockets of Drax’s shareholders and Lynemouth Power’s owners. This means 6 years more of business as usual tree burning subsidies, with the new end date for both tree burners moved from March 2027 to March 2031. The new agreement recognises some of the concerns we have, but the reality is more money for two big polluters.
What does this mean?
Continued tree burning past 2027
Forest destruction around the world
Communities in the Southern US polluted
Higher energy bills
Money taken away from genuine climate solutions
Subsidies are for around half of the generation that will have been up to 2027. Despite what Drax is saying, this is far from that they want.
The announcement included that Labour “recognise the strength of concerns about the use of unabated biomass”- that is us lot!
What can I do?
The fight to end dirty tree burning and transition to genuinely clean energy and green jobs is far from over. We need our MPs to take action in Parliament and do everything they can to stop this reckless decision.
Please take a moment today to make it clear to the Government and your MP that we will not stand by while they pour our money into forest destruction and pollution. We have set up an easy action for you to email your MP—please fill it in to send them a message.
Alternatively, you can call or meet with your MP, which is likely to get a better response. If you receive a reply, whether written or verbal, please forward it to us at biofuelwatch@gmail.com. We can provide resources and support to help you with a response.
Thank you for taking action!
