The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is planning to award up to £1bn in support for a new coal and biomass power station at Drax. The White Rose Project, if it is allowed to be constructed, will be the first new coal-fired power station to be built in the UK since 1974. It will lock the UK into even more coal and biomass burning long into the future, regardless of whether it captures any CO2 or not. In the process though, it will provide operators of Drax power station, the largest and dirtiest in the UK, with access to even more subsidies and state support.
On the 18th June We will deliver this petition to Amber Rudd, DECC’s new Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, accompanied by White Rosie, a giant inflatable white elephant. We invite you to join us, to send a loud and clear message to DECC that new coal and biomass power stations should not be supported with public money.
